Other parts can be added when needed, such as elastic bands between the upper and lower teeth to correct the bite, or small springs to open or close space. The elastic bands around the brackets can be a colour you choose, which many younger patients enjoy. After treatment, retainers hold the teeth in place.2

The brackets and wires are made of stainless steel or similar metal alloys. Each bracket is bonded to a tooth, and a wire runs through the brackets. Small elastic bands or clips hold the wire in the brackets. Elastic bands come in many colours, and you can often choose them.
Metal brackets are strong, hard to break and suited to most kinds of bite problems, including complex ones. They are widely used, and they work all the time without you having to remember to wear anything. Their main drawback is that they are visible.
Often yes. Coloured elastic bands go around each bracket and are changed at each adjustment visit, so you can change the colours. Light colours can look stained when you eat curry, tea or coffee, so some people pick darker ones.
Fitting does not hurt, but your teeth and gums can feel sore for a few days after fitting and after tightening. Brackets can rub the inside of your cheeks and lips for the first weeks. We give you orthodontic wax, and it settles as you get used to them.
Put orthodontic wax over the sharp part and call us. A loose bracket or a poking wire is usually repaired at a short visit. Do not cut or bend the wire yourself, and do not wait until the next routine visit if it is sore.
Some metal alloys contain nickel, and a small number of people are allergic to it. Tell us before treatment if you react to metal jewellery. Dr. Shah can then discuss alternatives, such as ceramic braces.
Brush after meals and at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, with the brush angled to clean above and below each bracket. Clean under the wire with interdental brushes or floss threaders once a day. Plaque left around brackets causes decay and white marks that remain after the braces are removed.
