A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible part of a tooth. It is used to protect a tooth that is weakened by decay, a very large filling, a crack or wear, to restore a tooth after root canal treatment, to hold a bridge, or to improve the look of a tooth.
A crown usually takes two visits. At the first the tooth is shaped, an impression or scan is taken and a temporary crown is fitted. The laboratory then makes the crown, which is fitted at the second visit, commonly one to two weeks later. Extra treatment, such as a root canal, adds visits.
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you stay awake and should not feel sharp pain. You may feel pressure and vibration. The tooth can feel sensitive for a few days after shaping, and the temporary crown can feel different from your own tooth.
It depends on the tooth, your bite and the look you want. Metal crowns are strong and need less tooth to be removed but they are visible. A crown will need replacing at some point. How long it lasts depends on the material, how well you clean around it, grinding or clenching habits, and the strength of the tooth beneath. Decay at the edge of a crown, a broken tooth or a worn crown can mean it needs repair or replacement.
