Endodontic Care in Andheri West, Mumbai

Assured Dental Care is a dental clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai, where root canal problems are assessed carefully and treated at the clinic when that is the right place for the tooth. Endodontics is the part of dentistry that deals with the inside of the tooth, the pulp and the root canals. An endodontist is a dentist with extra training in this area. This page explains what endodontic care involves, which cases a general dentist can treat, which need an endodontist, and how we help you decide.

Your care is led by Dr. Shreya Shah, Chief Dentist, who provides root canal treatment at the clinic herself and does not describe herself as an endodontist. If a tooth needs the skills or equipment of an endodontist, she says so, explains why and arranges coordinated care. If you have a toothache or have been told you need a root canal, the first step is an examination and an X-ray.

Quick answer

01 Overview

What is endodontic care, and what does an endodontist do?

Endodontic care is the treatment of the inside of a tooth. Inside every tooth is a soft core called the pulp, which runs down thin channels called root canals. When the pulp is inflamed or infected, it usually does not heal by itself, and the usual treatment is root canal treatment, which removes the pulp, cleans the canals and seals them.2

An endodontist is a dentist who has taken extra training in this field. Endodontists often treat the more difficult cases, such as teeth that have already had a root canal, teeth with narrow or unusual canals, and teeth that need surgery at the root tip. Whether a dentist holds a recognised specialty depends on training and registration with the dental authority in each country.1

Many root canals are straightforward and are done well by a general dentist. Our root canal treatment page describes how the treatment is done here, and this page is about the decision: who should treat which tooth. After a root canal, the tooth is usually protected with a filling or a crown, and if a tooth cannot be saved, tooth extraction and replacement are discussed.

Endodontic care means care for the inside of a tooth, and the right clinician depends on how complex the tooth is.

02 Suitability

Do you need an endodontist, or can a general dentist treat your tooth in Andheri West?

Dr. Shreya Shah decides this only after an examination and an X-ray. These are the general patterns.

A general dentist can often treat

  • A first root canal in a tooth with ordinary canal shapes.
  • A tooth with a deep cavity and an inflamed nerve that can be reached and cleaned.
  • A tooth that can be restored afterwards with a filling or crown.
  • A toothache whose cause is found on examination and X-ray.
  • A tooth where the risks and chances have been explained and you wish to go ahead.

An endodontist is often advised for

  • A tooth that has already had a root canal that has failed or become infected again.
  • Canals that look blocked, calcified or very curved on the X-ray.
  • A file or other instrument broken inside the canal.
  • A root tip infection that persists and may need surgery.
  • A tooth injured in a way that has damaged the root or its surroundings.

If the tooth cannot be saved, see dental implants to compare replacements. If you have severe pain or swelling, see dental emergency treatment for what to do the same day.

Simple root canals are treated here, and complex ones are referred, and the X-ray helps decide which yours is.

03 Options

Where your root canal care happens: treating here, referring or extracting

Dr. Shah explains every route for your tooth, including extraction and doing nothing, and which she advises.

Treated at this clinic

A tooth with typical anatomy and a first-time infection is treated by Dr. Shah under local anaesthesia, usually over two or more visits, and then restored.

Usually 2 or more visits

Referred to an endodontist

A tooth with a failed earlier root canal, blocked canals, a broken instrument or a possible need for root-tip surgery is referred, with your records and a plan for the final restoration.

Planned with the endodontist

Extraction and replacement

A tooth that cannot be saved is removed and replaced, or the gap is left. This avoids further root canal attempts but needs its own plan.

04 Procedure

How we decide who should treat your tooth in Andheri West, step by step

This is the decision process, not the treatment itself, which is described on our root canal page.2

The decision comes from the examination and the X-ray, and you are told how it was reached.

  1. Hearing about the problem

Dr. Shah asks about the pain, how long it has lasted, what triggers it and any earlier treatment on the tooth.

  2. Examining the tooth

She examines the tooth, taps it, tests it with cold and looks at the gum, to find which tooth is the source of the problem.

  3. Taking an X-ray

An X-ray shows the roots, the shape of the canals, any earlier root filling and any infection at the root tip. A 3D scan is advised only if a simple X-ray leaves questions.

  4. Judging how complex it is

She rates how difficult the tooth looks, for example the number and shape of the canals, previous treatment and how much tooth is left.

  5. Explaining the options

You are told whether the tooth can be treated here, would be better with an endodontist, or may be better removed, and why. You hear the chances and the risks.

  6. Treating or referring

If the tooth is treated here, root canal treatment starts. If a referral is chosen, she writes to the endodontist and shares your X-rays and notes.

  7. Protecting the tooth in the meantime

If you are in pain or have an infection while waiting, we relieve it and place a temporary filling so that the tooth is comfortable.

  8. Restoring and reviewing

After root canal treatment, we restore the tooth with a filling or crown and review it later with an X-ray.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of endodontic care in Andheri West, Mumbai?

Cost depends on your evaluation. Root canal care is planned for each tooth, so no single figure fits everyone.

Two painful teeth can need very different care. After the examination and X-ray, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the stages, including any referral, and the cost of each stage is discussed before you decide to go ahead.

What changes the plan

  • Which tooth it is and how many canals it has
  • How complex the canals are
  • Whether the tooth has had a root canal before
  • Whether a referral to an endodontist is advised
  • The imaging needed
  • The number of visits
  • The filling or crown that follows

What the evaluation covers

  • An examination of the painful tooth, the gum and the bite
  • An X-ray, and further imaging if it is needed
  • An explanation of how complex the tooth is
  • A discussion of your options, including referral and extraction
06 Aftercare

What should you do after root canal care or a referral, and when should you call?

After treatment hereAvoid chewing until the numbness has worn off. The tooth may be sore for a few days, and you can take the medicines you were advised. Chew on the other side.
If you are referredTake your records and the referral note with you. Keep any appointment you are given, and tell us if pain or swelling gets worse while you wait.
Until the tooth is restoredA root-treated tooth can be brittle, so avoid hard food on it. Return for the final filling or crown as planned.
Long termKeep up regular check-ups and cleaning. The tooth and the bone around it are checked on X-rays from time to time.

Warning signs that need a call the same day

  • Swelling of the face, gum or jaw that is growing
  • Fever or feeling unwell
  • Pain that gets worse instead of better
  • A temporary filling that falls out
  • A bad taste or pus near the tooth
  • A tooth that hurts to bite after the numbness has gone

Call 08806796696 or message us on WhatsApp. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling is spreading to your eye or neck, go to a hospital emergency department. For other urgent problems, call us first, and see dental emergency treatment.

A root-treated tooth is protected by its final restoration, so please return for it.

07 Risks and limits

What are the limits and risks of endodontic care, and when do we refer or advise extraction?

Risks and complications

  • Soreness for a few days after treatment.
  • Incomplete healing. In a review of studies, between about 68 and 85 out of 100 root-treated teeth healed completely, depending on how strictly healing was measured, so some need further treatment.4
  • A fine instrument breaking inside the tooth, a curved or blocked canal or a hole in the side of the root.
  • A crack or fracture of the root or tooth, now or later.
  • Infection or swelling that returns.
  • The need for repeat treatment, root-tip surgery or removal of the tooth.
  • An added visit or a wait if referral is needed.

When we advise against, delay or refer

  • A tooth that has failed before and is complex, which is referred to an endodontist rather than attempted here.
  • A tooth with a root fracture or too little healthy structure to restore, for which extraction is explained.
  • A broken instrument or a blocked canal that cannot be cleared with the equipment available.
  • A medical condition that needs your doctor's advice first.
  • A request to attempt a complex tooth without being told the risks.
  • A person who cannot attend the visits needed to finish treatment.

We treat the teeth we can treat well, and refer the rest rather than risk the tooth.

08 First visit

What happens at your first endodontic visit in Andheri West?

Your first visit is an examination, an X-ray and a decision about who should treat your tooth.

  1. We ask about the pain, when it started and any earlier treatment.
  2. Dr. Shah examines the tooth and takes an X-ray.
  3. She explains how complex the tooth looks and which route she advises.
  4. The steps, the visits, the chances and the risks are explained before you decide anything.

Before you come

Bring any earlier X-rays and reports, especially from an earlier root canal, and a list of the medicines you take. Tell us about allergies, diabetes and heart conditions. If you have swelling, fever or severe pain, call us first so that we can arrange the earliest visit.

12 Questions

Endodontist and root canal questions we hear in Andheri West

Straight answers to what patients ask before they book. If your question is not here, call or message us.

How is the cost of endodontic care decided in Andheri West?

Root canal care is planned for each tooth, so the cost is given only after your evaluation. It depends on which tooth it is, how many canals it has, how complex they are, whether the tooth has been treated before, the imaging needed, the number of visits, whether a referral is needed and the filling or crown that follows. After the examination, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the plan and the cost of each stage before you decide.

What is an endodontist?

An endodontist is a dentist who has had extra training in the inside of the tooth, the pulp and root canals, and who spends much of their time on root canal treatment, repeat treatment and related surgery. Whether a dentist holds a recognised specialty depends on training and registration with the dental authority in each country.

Is Dr. Shah an endodontist?

Dr. Shreya Shah is the Chief Dentist at Assured Dental Care, and she provides root canal treatment at the clinic. She does not describe herself as an endodontist. When a tooth needs the skills or equipment of an endodontist, she says so and arranges coordinated care.

When should a root canal be done by an endodontist?

An endodontist is often advised when a tooth has already had a root canal that has failed, when the canals are blocked, very narrow or unusually shaped, when an instrument has broken inside the tooth, when the root tip may need surgery, or after complicated injury to a tooth. A first root canal in a tooth with a typical shape can often be done by a general dentist.

Will I be sent away if my tooth is complicated?

Only if that is the right route for the tooth. Dr. Shah assesses the tooth first, explains how difficult it looks and why, and gives you the choice. If referral is advised, she helps with the records and coordinates what comes next, including the crown or filling at the end.

Does a referral make treatment take longer?

It can add a visit or a wait for an appointment. If the tooth is painful or infected, we help with the pain and infection first so that you are comfortable while the referral is arranged.

Is root canal treatment painful?

The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you should not feel sharp pain. Some pressure is normal, and soreness for a few days afterwards is common. Tell us during treatment if you feel pain and we will pause and numb the area again.

Can I get a second opinion on a root canal plan?

Yes. If another clinic has advised a root canal, an extraction or a re-treatment, bring the X-rays. Dr. Shah examines the tooth and explains what she finds, including whether she would treat it herself or refer it.
