Implant Dentist in Andheri West, Mumbai: Who Does What

Assured Dental Care is a dental clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai, where dental implant treatment is planned carefully, with a clear explanation of who does each part. People often search for an implantologist or an implant dentist, but these are everyday terms and not a registered title in many countries, so they do not tell you what training a dentist has. Implant treatment has three parts: planning, placing the implant and restoring it with a crown, bridge or denture. This page explains each part and what to ask any clinic.

Your care is led by Dr. Shreya Shah, Chief Dentist, who examines you, plans implant treatment and looks after your teeth, gums and restorations, and does not describe herself as an implantologist. When surgery or a restoration needs skills beyond what is available at the clinic, she says so and arranges coordinated care. If you are considering implants, the first step is an examination and, if it is needed, a scan.

Questions answered plainly

We give you a list of questions to ask any implant dentist, including us.

01 Overview

What is an implant dentist, and what are the parts of implant treatment?

A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth, and it carries a crown, bridge or denture. The terms implantologist and implant dentist are used for dentists who place or restore implants. In many countries, implant dentistry is not a separate specialty on the register, so the title says little about training. Whether a dentist holds a recognised specialty depends on training and registration with the dental authority in each country.4

Implant treatment has three parts. Planning decides whether an implant suits you, where it goes and what it will carry, using an examination, X-rays and sometimes a 3D scan. Placement is the surgery. Restoration is making and fitting the crown, bridge or denture, and caring for it afterwards. One dentist can do all three, or they can be shared between a surgeon and a restorative dentist.3

Our dental implants page describes the process step by step, and there are pages on a single tooth implant, multiple teeth implants and full arch plans such as All-on-4. Gum disease around an implant is a separate problem, which is explained on our periodontal pages.

Implant treatment is planning, surgery and restoration, and you are entitled to know who does each part.

02 Suitability

Who should plan your implant treatment, and when do we refer in Andheri West?

Dr. Shreya Shah decides this only after an examination and, where needed, a scan. These are the general patterns.

Planning and restoration here are often a good fit when

  • You want an explanation of whether an implant suits you and the alternatives.
  • Your teeth, gums and bite need to be assessed and prepared first.
  • You need a crown, bridge or denture planned to fit your bite.
  • Your gums and remaining teeth need care alongside the implant.
  • You want a second opinion on an implant plan.

Coordinated care with a surgeon or another clinician is often advised when

  • The bone is thin and complex grafting is needed.
  • The implant would lie very close to a nerve or the sinus.
  • You have a health condition that makes surgery higher risk.
  • A full arch of implants is planned.
  • A previous implant has failed and the reason needs a further opinion.

If a tooth is still in the mouth but failing, root canal treatment may keep it, and teeth that cannot be saved are removed by tooth extraction. If a bridge or denture suits you better, see dental bridges and dentures.

Planning and care are done here, and surgery that needs more is coordinated with a suitably trained clinician.

03 Options

Questions to ask any implant dentist, and how we answer them at our Andheri West clinic

These are the questions that tell you most. We are happy to answer them for you.

Training and experience

Ask what training the dentist has in implants, how many cases like yours they have treated and whether they work with a surgeon or restorative dentist. Ask for plain answers.

Before you agree

Who does each part

Ask who plans, who places the implant, who makes the crown and who looks after you afterwards. It is reasonable for these to be different people.

Before you agree

The plan, the risks and the aftercare

Ask what scans are used, which implant system is used and why, what the risks are for you, what happens if an implant fails and what maintenance is needed.

04 Procedure

How implant care is planned and shared in Andheri West, step by step

This describes the planning and coordination, not the surgery itself, which is described on our implants page.3

A good plan starts from the final tooth and names who does each step.

  1. Listening to your goals

Dr. Shah asks which teeth are missing, how long ago they were lost and what you want. She asks about your health, medicines and tobacco use.

  2. Examining teeth, gums and bite

She examines the gap, the teeth beside it, the gums and your bite, and looks for decay and gum disease that must be treated first.

  3. X-rays and, if needed, a scan

X-rays show the bone and neighbouring teeth. A 3D scan is advised when it is needed to see the bone, the nerves and the sinus.

  4. Deciding whether an implant suits you

She explains whether an implant is advisable, and compares it with a bridge, a denture or no replacement, in plain language.

  5. Planning the restoration first

The crown, bridge or denture is planned first, and the implant position follows from it.

  6. Agreeing who does each part

You are told who will place the implant and who will make and fit the restoration. If surgery is coordinated with a surgeon, the handover is explained.

  7. Treating what must come first

Gum disease, decay and teeth that must be removed are treated, and healing is allowed before surgery.

  8. Surgery, restoration and maintenance

After surgery and healing, the restoration is made and fitted, and maintenance visits keep the gums and the implant healthy.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of implant care in Andheri West, Mumbai?

Cost depends on your evaluation. Implant care is planned for each person, so no single figure fits everyone.

Two people who need one implant can have very different plans. After the examination and any scan, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the stages, including who does each, and the cost of each stage is discussed before you decide to go ahead.

What changes the plan

  • The number of implants
  • The implant system
  • The scans and X-rays
  • Tooth removal, bone building or gum treatment first
  • The crown, bridge or denture
  • Who carries out each stage
  • The number of visits and the maintenance

What the evaluation covers

  • An examination of the gap, teeth, gums and bite
  • X-rays, and a scan if it is needed
  • A talk about implants, bridges, dentures and not replacing
  • An explanation of who does each part
06 Aftercare

What should you do before and after implant surgery, and when should you call?

Before surgeryTreat gum disease and decay, stop smoking if you smoke, and tell us about all your medicines. Follow the instructions you are given about eating and medicines on the day.
After surgeryExpect swelling, bruising and soreness for several days. Use cold packs in short spells, take the medicines you were given, eat soft, cool food and rest. Avoid smoking.
During healingThe implant bonds with the bone over a period of months. Keep your check-ups and tell us at once if anything feels loose or sore.
With the final toothClean around it every day as shown. Come for maintenance so that the gum and bone around the implant are checked.

Warning signs that need a call the same day

  • Swelling that grows after the third day, or a fever
  • Bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure
  • Pain that gets worse instead of better
  • An implant, crown or screw that feels loose
  • Pus, a bad taste or a gum that has opened
  • Numbness that lasts after the anaesthetic has worn off

Call 08806796696 or message us on WhatsApp. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling is spreading to your eye or neck, go to a hospital emergency department. For a loose crown or other urgent problem, see dental emergency treatment.

Cleaning around an implant every day and regular maintenance protect it.

07 Risks and limits

What are the limits and risks of implant treatment, and when do we refer?

Risks and complications

  • Bleeding, swelling and infection after surgery.
  • An implant that does not bond with the bone. In a review of studies with ten years of follow-up, about 93 to 96 in 100 implants were still in place, so some fail.1
  • Inflammation of the gum and bone around the implant caused by plaque, which studies describe as common.2
  • Numbness in the lip or chin after lower jaw surgery, usually temporary, and sinus problems with upper jaw implants.
  • Loosening or wear of the crown or screw over time.
  • A handover between clinicians that is not smooth, which is why we explain it in advance.

When we advise against, delay or refer

  • Untreated gum disease or infection.
  • Diabetes or another condition that is not well controlled.
  • Heavy smoking with no plan to cut down.
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw or bone-affecting medicines, until the treating doctor agrees.
  • Complex grafting, a position close to a nerve or the sinus, or a full arch, which are coordinated with a suitably trained surgeon.
  • A request for implants without an examination, X-rays and an explanation of the risks.
  • A failed implant that needs a further opinion before another attempt.

We say plainly who is better placed for each part, and refer when another clinician is.

08 First visit

What happens at your first implant planning visit in Andheri West?

Your first visit is an examination and a conversation about the plan and who does what. No surgery is done.

  1. We ask about the missing tooth, your health, your medicines and what you want.
  2. Dr. Shah examines the gap, the teeth beside it and the gums, and takes X-rays.
  3. She explains whether an implant suits you, the alternatives, and who would do each part of the treatment.
  4. The risks and the next steps are explained, and you can ask any questions before deciding.

Before you come

Bring any earlier X-rays, scans or reports, and any implant plan or quote you have been given. Write down your questions, using the list on this page. Tell us about allergies, diabetes, heart conditions, blood thinners and tobacco use.

12 Questions

Implant dentist questions we hear in Andheri West

Straight answers to what patients ask before they book. If your question is not here, call or message us.

How is the cost of implant care decided in Andheri West?

Implant care is planned for each person, so the cost is given only after your evaluation. It depends on the number of implants, the implant system, the scans, whether the tooth must be removed or bone built up, the crown, bridge or denture, who carries out each stage, the number of visits and the maintenance. After the examination, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the plan and the cost of each stage before you decide.

What is an implantologist or implant dentist?

These are everyday terms for a dentist who places or restores dental implants. In many countries, implant dentistry is not a separate registered specialty, so the term does not tell you what training the dentist has. It is sensible to ask about training, experience and which part of the treatment each clinician does.

Is Dr. Shah an implantologist?

Dr. Shreya Shah is the Chief Dentist at Assured Dental Care, and she does not describe herself as an implantologist. She examines you, plans implant treatment and looks after the teeth, gums and crowns. When surgery or a restoration needs skills beyond what is available at the clinic, she says so and arranges coordinated care.

Who places the implant, and who makes the crown?

Implant treatment has three parts: planning, placing the implant and restoring it with a crown, bridge or denture. They may all be done by one dentist or shared between a surgeon and a restorative dentist. We tell you who does each part before you agree to start.

What should I ask any implant dentist?

Ask about their training and experience with the type of case you have, which part of the treatment they do themselves, which implant system they use and why, how they plan with scans, what happens if an implant fails, what maintenance is needed and what the risks are for you. A good dentist answers plainly.

Do you use scans to plan implants?

A 3D scan is used when the plan needs it, to see the bone, the nerves and the sinus. Not every case needs one, and we explain why it is advised in yours.

What are the risks of implants?

Risks include bleeding, swelling and infection after surgery, an implant that does not bond with the bone, gum and bone inflammation around the implant caused by plaque, and problems with the crown or screw. In a review of studies with ten years of follow-up, about 93 to 96 in 100 implants were still in place. Dr. Shah explains the risks for your case.

Can I get a second opinion on an implant plan?

Yes. Bring the plan, any scans and the quote or breakdown you were given. Dr. Shah examines you, explains what she finds and compares the options, including not replacing the tooth.
