Impacted Tooth Removal in Andheri West, Mumbai

Assured Dental Care is a dental clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai, where an impacted tooth is first looked at, X-rayed and explained before anything is done. A tooth is impacted when it is stuck below the gum or against bone or another tooth and cannot come through into its normal place. Wisdom teeth are the ones most often affected, and an impacted tooth that causes no trouble may only need watching. When it causes infection, decay, damage or pain, removal under local anaesthesia is considered.

Your care is led by Dr. Shreya Shah, Chief Dentist, who reads the X-ray with you and explains what the tooth is doing and what your choices are. If you are looking for a dentist in Andheri West for an impacted tooth, the first step is an examination and an X-ray, followed by a plain explanation of the risks, and referral to an oral surgeon if the tooth is in a difficult position.

Quick answer

Impacted tooth removal at Assured Dental Care in Andheri West, Mumbai takes out a tooth that is stuck below the gum or against bone, after an X-ray shows its position. Dr. Shreya Shah explains whether to remove, watch or refer. Removal is under local anaesthesia and usually involves a small cut in the gum.

Same-day consultation

Examination and an X-ray start at your first visit, subject to availability.

Position judged first

The X-ray shows the depth, angle and roots, so the risks are explained before you decide.

Referral when needed

A tooth close to a nerve or the sinus can be referred to an oral surgeon.

01 Overview

What is an impacted tooth, and why does it cause trouble?

An impacted tooth is a tooth that has not come through the gum properly and is stuck. The most common cause is lack of room. A lower wisdom tooth may be tilted forward against the tooth in front, lie sideways, or be covered by gum and bone. Impacted teeth are often found on a routine X-ray before they cause any symptoms.1

An impacted tooth can cause problems in several ways. Gum partly covering it traps food and bacteria and can become infected. It can press on the tooth in front and damage it, decay can start in the hard-to-clean gap, and a cyst can form around the crown. If none of this is happening, the tooth may simply be watched.3

The teeth most often involved are wisdom teeth, which are covered on our wisdom tooth removal page. Removal of a tooth that is not impacted is on the tooth extraction page, and a tooth that is broken below the gum is covered under surgical tooth extraction. This page is about the stuck tooth and the decision to remove, watch or refer.

An impacted tooth is stuck, and it is removed only when it is causing or likely to cause disease.

02 Suitability

When does an impacted tooth need to be removed in Andheri West?

Dr. Shreya Shah decides this only after an examination and an X-ray. These are the general patterns.

Reasons to remove an impacted tooth

  • Repeated infection or swelling of the gum over the tooth.
  • Decay in the tooth or in the tooth beside it.
  • Damage to the root of the tooth in front.
  • A cyst or other disease seen around the tooth on an X-ray.
  • The tooth is in the way of other treatment.

Reasons to watch or refer instead

  • The tooth causes no symptoms and shows no disease.
  • The tooth is deeply buried or very close to a nerve or the sinus.
  • The tooth is a canine that may be guided into place by an orthodontist.
  • Your health needs your doctor's advice before surgery.
  • You are not ready to decide and the tooth is not causing urgent problems.

If an impacted tooth is infected and painful, see dental emergency treatment for what to do the same day. If the cause of pain is decay in the tooth in front, a filling or root canal treatment may help.

A stuck tooth is removed for a reason, and the X-ray and examination show whether there is one.

03 Options

Dr. Shah explains every option, including leaving the tooth and what to watch for.

04 Procedure

How an impacted tooth is removed in Andheri West, step by step

The steps depend on how deep and how angled the tooth is. Your plan may have more or fewer steps.1

Careful planning from the X-ray makes the removal more predictable, and clear aftercare helps healing.

  1. Examination and X-ray

Dr. Shah examines the area and takes an X-ray to see the depth, the angle, the roots and the nerve. A 3D scan is advised only when the X-ray leaves questions.

  2. Judging the risk

The position is compared with the nerve and sinus. If the risk is higher than this clinic can manage, referral to an oral surgeon is explained.

  3. Talking through the choice

You are told whether to remove, watch or refer, what removal involves and the risks. You decide before treatment starts.

  4. Numbing the area

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, and we wait until it is fully numb. You stay awake.

  5. Opening the gum

A small cut is made in the gum to lift a flap and show the tooth and the bone over it.

  6. Removing a little bone

Some bone over the tooth may be removed to make a path for it. This is done carefully and kept to the amount needed.

  7. Sectioning and lifting out the tooth

A tooth that cannot come out whole is divided into pieces, and each piece is lifted out. The socket is checked and cleaned.

  8. Stitches and aftercare

Stitches close the gum and you bite on gauze. You are given written instructions and a review visit is arranged.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of impacted tooth removal in Andheri West, Mumbai?

Cost depends on your evaluation. Removal of an impacted tooth is planned for each tooth, so no single figure fits everyone.

Two impacted teeth can need very different work. After the examination and X-ray, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the stages, and the cost of each stage is discussed before you decide to go ahead.

What changes the plan

  • How deep the tooth lies and its angle
  • How close it is to a nerve or the sinus
  • Whether the tooth must be divided into pieces
  • The imaging required
  • The type of anaesthesia
  • Stitches and follow-up visits
  • Referral to an oral surgeon, if needed

What the evaluation covers

  • An examination of the tooth, the gum and the bite
  • An X-ray, and a 3D scan only if it is needed
  • An explanation of the position and the risks
  • A discussion of options, including watching the tooth
06 Aftercare

What should you do after impacted tooth removal, and when should you call?

The first hoursKeep firm pressure on the gauze for the time shown. Leave the area alone: no rinsing, spitting or poking. Eat only when the numbness has gone, and avoid cigarettes and alcohol for the first day or two.
Days 1 to 3Swelling, bruising and a stiff jaw usually reach their worst around the second or third day. Short spells with a cold pack on the cheek, the medicines you were given and soft, cool food all help.
Days 3 to 7Swelling begins to ease. Gentle warm salt water rinses after meals can start when we say so. A throbbing pain that grows, or a foul taste, can mean dry socket, so call us.
Weeks 1 to 2The gum closes over the socket. Come back for the review and for stitches that did not dissolve to be checked or removed.

Warning signs that need a call the same day

  • Pain that grows from the third day, with a foul taste
  • Bleeding that carries on after 20 minutes of firm pressure
  • Swelling that keeps growing after the third day, or a fever
  • Pus coming from the area
  • A lip, chin or tongue that stays numb after the anaesthetic should have worn off
  • A jaw that is getting harder to open

Call 08806796696 or message us on WhatsApp. Go to a hospital emergency department if you struggle to breathe or swallow, or if swelling spreads to your eye or neck. For other urgent problems, see dental emergency treatment.

Rest, soft food and careful first-day habits help the site of an impacted tooth to heal.

07 Risks and limits

What are the risks of impacted tooth removal, and when do we advise against it?

Risks and complications

  • Swelling, bruising, bleeding and jaw stiffness, usually greater than after a simple extraction.
  • Dry socket, usually three to five days after removal.
  • Infection of the socket or the gum flap.
  • Bruising of a nerve in the lower jaw, causing numbness or tingling of the lip, chin or tongue, usually temporary and rarely lasting.1
  • An opening between the mouth and the sinus when an upper tooth is removed.
  • Damage to the tooth in front or its filling.
  • A fragment of root left behind, which is then watched or removed.

When we advise against, delay or refer

  • An impacted tooth that causes no symptoms or disease, which national guidance advises leaving alone.3
  • A tooth very close to a nerve, very deeply buried or in the sinus region, which is better treated by an oral surgeon.
  • Severe infection with spreading swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing, which needs a hospital.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, blood-thinning medicines, a recent heart problem or other conditions, until the plan is agreed with your doctor.
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw or bone-affecting medicines, which can affect healing.
  • A request for removal without an X-ray, because the position of the tooth must be known first.

We remove an impacted tooth when there is a clear reason and the risk is acceptable, and refer when it is not.

08 First visit

What happens at your first impacted tooth visit in Andheri West?

The first visit is for answers: an examination, an X-ray and a plan. If the tooth is infected and painful, treatment may begin the same day, subject to availability.

  1. You describe the pain, swelling or bad taste and when it began.
  2. Dr. Shah examines the area and takes an X-ray, with a 3D scan only if the X-ray leaves questions.
  3. She puts the X-ray in front of you and explains where the tooth lies and what that means.
  4. The choices, the steps, the recovery and the risks are explained before any decision.

Before you come

Take along earlier X-rays or reports and a list of your medicines. Mention allergies, diabetes, heart problems, blood thinners and tobacco. If you have swelling, a fever or severe pain, phone first so that we can find the earliest slot.

Impacted tooth questions we hear in Andheri West

Straight answers to what patients ask before they book. If your question is not here, call or message us.

How is the cost of impacted tooth removal decided in Andheri West?

Removal of an impacted tooth is planned for each tooth, so the cost is given only after your evaluation. It depends on how deeply the tooth lies, its angle, how close it is to a nerve or the sinus, the imaging needed, whether an oral surgeon is involved, the type of anaesthesia and the follow-up. After the examination, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the plan and the cost of each stage before you decide.

What does impacted mean?

An impacted tooth is one that is stuck and cannot come through the gum into its normal position. It may be blocked by the tooth in front, by bone, or by its own angle. Wisdom teeth are the teeth most often impacted, and upper canines can also be affected.

Does an impacted tooth always need to be removed?

No. An impacted tooth that causes no trouble and shows no sign of disease can be left in place and checked at regular visits with X-rays. Removal is advised when there is infection, decay, damage to the next tooth, a cyst or pain. An impacted canine may sometimes be guided into place with orthodontic treatment instead.

Why does an impacted tooth need an X-ray first?

An X-ray shows how deep the tooth is, the angle, the shape of the roots and how close it is to a nerve or the sinus. Without this, the risks cannot be judged. Sometimes a 3D scan is advised when a standard X-ray leaves questions, and you are told why.

Is removing an impacted tooth more painful than a normal extraction?

The area is numbed, so you should not feel sharp pain during the procedure. Afterwards, soreness, swelling, bruising and jaw stiffness are usually greater than after a simple extraction and last longer, often several days. Tell us during treatment if you feel pain and we will pause and numb the area again.

Can I go to work after the procedure?

Many people rest for a day or two, depending on how difficult the removal was and how they feel. Swelling usually peaks around the second or third day. We give you advice for your own case, and we suggest planning some quiet time.

What can go wrong when an impacted tooth is removed?

Common effects are swelling, bruising, bleeding and jaw stiffness. Less often, dry socket or infection can occur. A tooth near the nerve can cause numbness of the lip, chin or tongue, usually temporary. Dr. Shah explains the risks for your tooth before you decide.

When would you send me to an oral surgeon?

We refer when the tooth lies very close to a nerve or the sinus, is very deeply buried, or when your health needs extra care. Dr. Shah explains why, and arranges coordinated care with a suitably trained surgeon.
