Tooth Extraction in Andheri West, Mumbai

Assured Dental Care is a dental clinic in Andheri West, Mumbai, where a tooth extraction is advised only when a tooth cannot reasonably be saved or when removing it is part of a larger plan. An extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the jawbone, done under local anaesthesia so that the area is numb. Dr. Shreya Shah checks the tooth, the gum and the bone first, and explains the alternatives before any tooth is taken out.

Your care is led by Dr. Shreya Shah, Chief Dentist, who looks for ways to keep a tooth before suggesting removal. If you are looking for a dentist in Andheri West for a painful, broken or loose tooth, the first step is an examination and an X-ray, followed by a clear explanation of what is wrong, what the options are and what each one involves.

Quick answer

A tooth extraction at Assured Dental Care in Andheri West, Mumbai removes a tooth that cannot be saved, under local anaesthesia. Dr. Shreya Shah examines the tooth, takes an X-ray and explains the options first. A simple extraction is usually one visit, and the gum takes one to two weeks to close.

Same-day consultation

Examination and an X-ray start at your first visit, subject to availability.

Tooth-saving check first

Dr. Shah checks whether the tooth can be treated and kept before suggesting removal.

A plan for the gap

If a tooth is removed, we discuss whether and how to replace it so that the neighbouring teeth stay in place.

01 Overview

What is a tooth extraction, and when is it the right treatment?

A tooth extraction removes a tooth from its socket in the jawbone. Each tooth is held by ligaments and bone, so the tooth is first loosened, then lifted out. Afterwards a blood clot forms in the socket, and the gum and bone heal over the following weeks.1

Extraction is advised when a tooth is too damaged to restore, for example a tooth broken below the gum, a tooth with severe decay or infection that cannot be fixed with root canal treatment, a tooth loosened by advanced gum disease, or a tooth that must come out for other treatment such as braces or dentures. Wisdom teeth that cause repeated problems may also be removed, as explained on our wisdom tooth removal page.

A simple extraction removes a tooth that can be seen and lifted out. A surgical extraction is used for a tooth broken below the gum, with curved roots or impacted in the bone, and it is covered on our surgical tooth extraction page.

Extraction removes a tooth that cannot be saved, and it is advised only after the options to keep the tooth have been checked.

02 Suitability

Who needs a tooth extraction in Andheri West?

Dr. Shreya Shah decides this only after an examination and an X-ray. These are the general patterns.

Signs that a tooth may need to be removed

  • A tooth broken below the gum that cannot be restored.
  • Severe decay that has destroyed most of the tooth.
  • A very loose tooth caused by advanced gum disease.
  • Repeated pain or swelling from an infected tooth that cannot be treated.
  • A tooth that is in the way of other treatment, with a plan agreed with you.

When extraction may not be the first choice

  • The tooth can be saved with a filling, a crown or root canal treatment.
  • Pain comes from another tooth, the gum or the jaw joint.
  • A baby tooth that is still holding space and has not loosened by itself.
  • A medical condition that needs the opinion of your doctor first.
  • You are not ready to decide, and the tooth is not causing urgent problems.

A tooth with a cavity may need only a filling, and a cracked or weak tooth may be saved with a dental crown. If a tooth is infected and painful, see dental emergency treatment for what to do the same day.

The cause of the problem decides the treatment, and an examination is the only way to find it.

03 Options

Extraction or keeping the tooth: your options at our Andheri West dental clinic

Dr. Shah explains every option, including keeping the tooth and what happens if you do nothing.

Keep the tooth

A filling, root canal treatment or a crown may save a tooth that looks beyond repair. This keeps your own tooth and avoids the gap.

Planned per tooth

Extract and replace

The tooth is removed, and the gap is replaced with an implant, a bridge or a denture. Replacement can be planned before the extraction.

Planned per tooth

Extract and leave the gap

Some patients leave a gap, especially at the back of the mouth. Neighbouring teeth can drift, so we explain the effects first.

04 Procedure

How a tooth extraction is done in Andheri West, step by step

A simple extraction is usually done in one visit and takes a short time. A surgical extraction takes longer. Your plan may differ.1

Most of the care happens before and after the extraction, so each step is explained.

  1. Examination and X-ray

Dr. Shah asks about the pain, examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see the roots, the bone and the structures nearby.

  2. Explaining the options

You are told whether the tooth can be saved, what extraction involves, the alternatives, what replacement could look like and the risks, before you decide.

  3. Numbing the area

The tooth and the gum around it are numbed with local anaesthetic. You stay awake. We wait until the area is fully numb before starting.

  4. Loosening the tooth

A dental lever gently loosens the tooth from the ligaments and bone around it. You feel pressure but should not feel sharp pain.

  5. Removing the tooth

Forceps lift the tooth out. A tooth with curved or broken roots may need a small cut in the gum or may be divided into pieces.

  6. Cleaning the socket

The socket is checked and cleaned, and any sharp bone edges are smoothed. Stitches may be placed when the gum needs to be closed.

  7. Stopping the bleeding

You bite on a gauze pad with firm pressure while a blood clot forms. The clot protects the socket and starts healing.

  8. Aftercare and review

You are given instructions for the first days. A review visit checks healing, and a plan for a replacement tooth is discussed if you want one.

05 Cost

What decides the cost of a tooth extraction in Andheri West, Mumbai?

Cost depends on your evaluation. A tooth extraction is planned for each tooth, so no single figure fits everyone.

Two extractions can need very different work. After the examination and X-ray, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the stages, and the cost of each stage is discussed before you decide to go ahead.

What changes the plan

  • Whether the extraction is simple or surgical
  • The position and shape of the roots
  • Whether the tooth is broken, infected or impacted
  • The imaging required
  • Stitches and follow-up visits
  • Any treatment of infection first
  • A replacement tooth planned afterwards

What the evaluation covers

  • An examination of the tooth, the gum and the bone
  • An X-ray, and further imaging if it is needed
  • An explanation of whether the tooth can be saved
  • A discussion of options, including how to replace the tooth
06 Aftercare

What should you do after a tooth extraction, and when should you call?

First hoursBite firmly on the gauze for the time shown. Do not rinse, spit or touch the socket. Wait until the numbness has worn off before eating. Do not smoke for at least 24 to 48 hours.
First 2 daysChoose soft, cool food and avoid hot drinks. Chew on the other side. Some oozing and swelling are common. Take the medicines you were advised, and use a cold pack on the cheek in short spells.
Days 3 to 7Swelling eases. After the first day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals as advised. Keep brushing the other teeth, and avoid the socket. Watch for pain that is getting worse.
Weeks 1 and 2The gum closes over the socket. Return for any review visit, and talk to us about replacing the tooth if you want to. Keep up regular teeth cleaning and scaling.

Warning signs that need a call the same day

  • Pain that gets worse from the third day, or severe throbbing pain with a bad taste
  • Bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of firm pressure
  • Swelling that keeps growing after the third day, or a fever
  • Pus from the socket
  • Numbness that lasts after the anaesthetic has worn off
  • A stitch or dressing that comes out early

Call 08806796696 or message us on WhatsApp. If you have trouble breathing or swallowing, or swelling is spreading to your eye or neck, go to a hospital emergency department. For other urgent problems, see dental emergency treatment.

Following the first-day instructions closely lowers the risk of dry socket.

07 Risks and limits

What are the risks of a tooth extraction, and when do we advise against it?

Risks and complications

  • Bleeding, swelling and bruising, which usually settle in days.
  • Dry socket, where the blood clot is lost early and the socket becomes painful. It usually appears three to five days after the extraction, and smoking, touching the socket and difficult extractions raise the risk.3
  • Infection of the socket.
  • A fragment of root left behind, or damage to a nearby tooth or filling.
  • Temporary or, rarely, lasting numbness in the lip or chin after a lower tooth is removed.
  • An opening between the mouth and the sinus when an upper back tooth is removed.
  • Stiffness of the jaw and difficulty opening the mouth for a few days.

When we advise against, delay or refer

  • A tooth that can be saved with a simpler treatment.
  • Severe infection with spreading swelling or difficulty breathing or swallowing, which needs a hospital.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes, blood-thinning medicines, a recent heart problem or other conditions, until the plan has been agreed with your doctor.
  • Radiotherapy to the jaw or bone-affecting medicines, which can affect healing and need a carefully planned approach.
  • A wisdom tooth close to a nerve or in a position that needs an oral surgeon, for which Dr. Shah arranges coordinated care with a suitably trained clinician.
  • A person who wants a tooth removed without an examination, because the cause of the problem needs to be found first.

Removal cannot be undone, so we advise it only when saving the tooth is not reasonable.

08 First visit

Your first visit is an examination and a plan. If a tooth is infected and painful, the extraction can sometimes be done the same day, subject to availability.

  1. We ask about the pain, when it started and what makes it better or worse.
  2. Dr. Shah examines the tooth and gum, and takes an X-ray.
  3. She explains whether the tooth can be saved and the options, including replacement.
  4. The steps, the aftercare and the risks are explained before you decide anything.

12 Questions

Tooth extraction questions we hear in Andheri West

Straight answers to what patients ask before they book. If your question is not here, call or message us.

How is the cost of a tooth extraction decided in Andheri West?

A tooth extraction is planned for each tooth, so the cost is given only after your evaluation. It depends on whether the extraction is simple or surgical, the position and shape of the roots, whether the tooth is broken or infected, the imaging needed, and whether a replacement tooth is planned afterwards. After the examination, Dr. Shreya Shah explains the plan and the cost of each stage before you decide.

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

The area is numbed with local anaesthetic, so you stay awake and should not feel sharp pain. You may feel pressure and movement as the tooth is loosened. Soreness and some swelling for a few days afterwards are common. Tell us during the procedure if you feel pain and we will pause and numb the area again.

What is the difference between a simple and a surgical extraction?

A simple extraction removes a tooth that can be seen and loosened and lifted out. A surgical extraction is used when a tooth is broken below the gum, has curved roots or is impacted, and it may involve a small cut in the gum and sometimes dividing the tooth. Dr. Shah explains which applies to your tooth.

What is dry socket, and how can I avoid it?

Dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket is lost early, usually three to five days after the extraction, and it causes severe, throbbing pain and sometimes a bad taste. Smoking, touching the socket and difficult extractions raise the risk. Follow the aftercare we give you, and call us if the pain is getting worse instead of better.

When can I eat and drink after an extraction?

Wait until the numbness has worn off before eating, so you do not bite your cheek or tongue. Choose soft, cool food and avoid hot drinks for the first day. Chew on the other side and avoid hard, sticky and spicy food while the socket heals.

Should I replace the tooth after it is removed?

Often it is worth discussing. A gap can let neighbouring teeth drift and the opposite tooth grow into the space, and the bone shrinks over time. Options include a bridge, a denture or an implant, and some patients leave a gap at the back of the mouth after talking it through. We explain each option.

Can a tooth be removed if I take blood thinners or have diabetes?

Often yes, but the plan needs care. Tell us about blood thinners, diabetes, heart conditions and any medicines before the extraction. We may need to speak to your doctor first, or arrange the extraction in a setting that suits your health.

What should I do if bleeding does not stop?

Bite firmly on a clean folded gauze or cloth for 20 minutes without checking. Sit upright and avoid rinsing or spitting. If bleeding continues after that, call us the same day. If bleeding is heavy or you feel faint, go to a hospital emergency department.
